With deep love and great sorrow, the family of Virginia Thompson, 88, of Evington, VA, announces her peaceful passing on November 26, 2025, in her home, surrounded by those who adored her. She was the daughter of the late Dabney and Lula Morris.
Born on September 3, 1937, in South Hill, VA, Virginia lived a life marked by strength, devotion, and a heart that welcomed everyone. She is preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Iva Mae Layne, her brother, James Martin, and her son in law, Aubrey Hall.
Known affectionately as Nanny T, Virginia was the steady, loving center of her family. She was a devoted mother to her four children and a proud Nanny to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each of whom she treasured beyond measure. Her life was rich with the simple beautiful things she loved tending her garden and yard, cooking for her family, growing beautiful flowers, and dancing every week with her sweetheart Alex, and their many lifelong friends.
Virginia worked many years for the Duti-Duds Inc, Colonial Restaurant, and retired from Campbell County Public Schools.
A faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church in Appomattox, VA, Virginia lived her life with grace, gratitude, and an open heart.
For the past 17 years, Virginia shared her life with her truest love, Alex Scruggs, who brought her endless happiness, adventure, and companionship. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Alex for giving Nanny T some of the most joyful years of her life.
Virginia is survived by her children, William Stokes, Linda Hall, and Donna Gilliam; her grandchildren, Robert Layne, James Bennett, Chase Gallier (Amber), Ashley Stokes, Laura Caruso (Dylan), Ivan Gilliam (Taylor), and Blair Bennett; and her great-grandchildren, Adalyn Gallier, Alayna Gallier, Asher Gallier, Emberly Gilliam, Emory Caruso, Ivy Gilliam, and Emmett Caruso.
Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg.
A celebration of Virginia’s life will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, with Dr. Rondel “Ron” Rumberg officiating. Graveside will be immediately after funeral at Virginia Memorial Park, Forest VA.
