Listen to Obituary

Valli Smith Ritchie, 75, transitioned to heaven, surrounded by her family on October 4, 2025. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Valli was survived by her husband of 52 years, Ron Ritchie, and children, Branden (and wife Tricia), Cam (and wife Yang Chen), Amber (and Husband James Leonard) and Alex (and Partner Julie Williams). She was also survived by her 5 grandchildren, Ayumi, Meg, Caden, Hannah and Jay.

Valli grew up in a way everyone would dream of, travelling across the world and gaining enriching experiences. She had lived on many continents and that life fueled her love for travel and adventure. Valli graduated from James Madison University and became a teacher, which was a rewarding and influential career where she touched the hearts and lives of many people. After Retirement, you could find her enjoying her pool or traveling quite literally all over the world. She loved to cruise and tour new places, most recently going to South America in 2024. At 7:30 religiously, you could find her glued to the latest episode of Jeopardy with her family. It was a tradition that embodied her love of knowledge, and she would count how many we all answered correctly. This also exhibited her quirky humor and rhetoric. We had a record of 43. When her family got together, whether it was a holiday or Monday Spaghetti Night, she would have a table set for 15, a testament to the love and family that she represented. Valli not only loved her family but also loved God.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Monroe, and her favorite Bible verse was Isaiah 41:13. Valli will be remembered for her love of family, travel and intelligence and humor. Valli will be missed and loved always.

"For I the Lord your God will hold your right hand, saying unto you, Fear not; I will help you"

- Isaiah 41:13
