On Wednesday, December 24, 2025, Thurman Shuron Callands departed this life at the age of 72. He was born in Lynchburg, VA on May 21, 1953, to the late Thurman Junior and Ann Earl Callands.
At an early age, he joined Hickory Grove Baptist Church, where he would faithfully return to celebrate family and homecoming services. Shuron, as he was affectionately known, attended Campbell County High School. During this time, Shuron played the bass guitar as one of the original members of “Soul Brothers Six” where he shared his love of music with the listening public. You could hear them play at local venues, the family restaurant and store on “501” or sometimes on the Saturday Session Show that aired on local channel WDBJ 7. Following high school, Shuron worked at Pepsi Co for several years until he went to work for Delta Star, Inc where he remained until his retirement. In his retirement, Shuron volunteered with Centra/Stroobants Cardiovascular Center. When he wasn’t volunteering or enjoying spoiling his grandkids, Shuron spent his time working on cars, repairing things, or just working around the home.
During the formative years of his life, Shuron would meet the love of his life, Dianne Hicks, whom he married on June 10, 1972. To this union, they had three sons; Christopher Callands (Charla) and Erik Callands of Lynchburg, VA, and Stevon Callands of Chester, VA. Shuron also had three grandchildren that were his heart and the center of his world; Brandon, Makayla and Sydney Callands; and not to be forgotten was his grand-dog Marley.
Shuron was preceded in death by his parents, Thurman and Ann Callands. Left to cherish his memories; along with his wife of 53 years, Dianne Callands, three sons and three grandchildren are sisters, Truee Dorsey (Jerry) of Clayton, DE, Marion Kain of Lynchburg, VA; brothers, Keith Callands (Siniva) of Harker Heights, TX, and Tori Callands (Alicia) of Lynchburg, VA; and one sister-in-law, Carolyn Hatmaker (Garry), along with a host of nieces, nephews, and many friends, family and associates who were are special and dear to his heart.
A funeral service will be held on Jan. 2nd, 2026, at 2:00pm at New Vine Baptist church with Rev. Daryl Drew officiating and Rev. Mack H. Johnson eulogist. Mr. Callands will be available for public viewing on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, from 10:00am until 4:00pm at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Dr. Lynchburg.
