Thomas Roosevelt Scruggs

Thomas Roosevelt Scruggs died on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at the age of 88. He was born on June 23, 1938, to the late Theodore Roosevelt and Mattie Mayhew Scruggs of Red House, Va.

He proudly served in the United States Army, a lifetime member of the Big Island Rescue Squad, and volunteered with Bedford Ride. He retired from the News and Advance where he worked in advertising for 43 years. Tom was a member of Big Island Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher.

He is survived by his loving wife, Susan; daughters, Sophie (Donny) Bobbitt and Michelle Wells; grandchildren, Landon Phillips, Bryson Smith, Jackson Wells, and Violet Smith; sister, Dean Saunders; sister-in-law, Patty Fortune; nephews, T.R., Christopher and Joey; niece, Danielle; and dear friends, Brian Wells and Jake Spinner.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at Big Island Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. Burial will be held at the Big Island Baptist Church Cemetery following the funeral services.
