Thomas F. Hall, Jr., 76, of Amherst, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on October 7, 2026. He was the son of the late Thomas F. Hall, Sr. and Kathleen Shannon Hall. Tom was a dedicated husband, father, entrepreneur, and builder.
Tom was born on January 22, 1950, in Beckley, West Virginia. In high school, he met Janie Whitley Mundy, and the two would spend more than fifty years of love together building a life, family, and legacy. Tom became the first in his family to graduate from college, earning a Bachelor’s Degree from Concord College and continuing his studies at West Virginia University. He went to work for and eventually became president of George E. Jones & Sons, Inc. construction company, where he led for more than 40 years. Tom was a builder in more ways than one, leaving a permanent memorial throughout the area through the homes, commercial buildings, infrastructure, developments, charitable endeavors, and, most importantly, friendships he built. He was twice the past president of the Associated General Contractors of Central Virginia and was appointed by Virginia Governor George Allen to the State Board of Contractors. He acted as an informal business, life, and financial advisor to many people and spent years on the board of directors of First National Bank of Altavista. He had a love of aviation and earned his private pilot’s license. Tom was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, where he donated countless hours in various leadership capacities over the years, and he enjoyed God’s creation as a lover of all things nature, especially the scenic landscapes out west in Idaho and Montana, where fly fishing was his Heaven on Earth.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Janie Whitley Mundy Hall; his sons, of whom he was so proud, Michael Thomas Hall and his wife Amanda, and John Norman Hall and his wife Ann, of Lynchburg, VA; three grandchildren whom he loved very much, Tyler Thomas Hall, Declan James Hall, and William Thomas Hall; his siblings, Linda Pomeroy of Beckley, WV, and Jeannie Lucas of Beaver, WV; and many nieces and nephews.
He’ll miss his many dear friends, including his fishing buddy Mitch, out-west traveling crew Philip and Ed, and long-time business partner and friend David Bays. In Heaven, he’s reunited with others, including Norm, Jimmy, Butch, Ed, Gary, and Lloyd. He valued his loyal employees, many of whom, like Diane, themselves became lifelong friends, and he’s no doubt planning to build something right now with Bud and Bill.
Tom lived a productive life. He accomplished a great deal, of which you’d never hear him boast. He was full of love and loved by many. His quick wit, the lessons he taught us, and the impact he made will last forever. Well done, good and faithful servant.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Emmanuel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 451, Amherst, VA 24521.
