Tammy Sue Wheeler, 57, of Bedford passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at UVA Medical Center surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on May 26, 1969, in Bedford, VA. A daughter of John “Butch” Wheeler and Sandra “Sandy” Carter Wheeler. Tammy was preceded in death by her grandparents, Harry and Elizabeth Carter of Roanoke and Gladys and John Wheeler of Bedford.

Tammy was a graduate of Liberty High School class of 1987. She played third base for the Liberty Minettes and in years past played in Dixie Youth with her mom Sandy as her coach. She was a member of the Bedford Women of the Moose serving as chairman of the Mooseheart and the Moosehaven committees, she proudly served as president of the Bedford Ignitors Car Club, volunteered at the Bedford Christmas Station. She always had a passion for helping others in any way. Tammy also loved spending time with her fur babies and ponies. She enjoyed being outside, spending time in her flowers and doing yard work. One of her biggest passions was anything hotrods and drag racing. She was known all over for her presence in both, and she made a lasting impact on folks with her knowledge and understanding of a common passion with others. Tammy never let her physical impairments interfere with life. She will be missed greatly by her family and friends.

Left to cherish her memory in addition to her parents are the love of her life and best friend, Jeff Cundiff; her father-in-law, Shorty Cundiff; her aunts, Lois Carter of Goodview, Donna Hodges of Roanoke, Bonnie Ruff of Forest; her uncle Eddie Carter of Roanoke; cousins, Pat Overstreet, Jr, Larry Overstreet and Dennis Overstreet of Bedford, who claimed her as their sister. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, cousins and many other relatives and so many friends, especially her Bedford Ignitors car club family.

A funeral service and celebration of Tammy’s life will be conducted at 11:00 am on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at Tharp Funeral Chapel in Bedford with Pastor Rick Dellinger officiating. Burial will follow at Peaks Church and Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00pm on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at Tharp Funeral Home in Bedford. Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford is assisting the family.
