Susie L. Atkins, 88 of Lynchburg, Va., departed this life Thursday, August 17, 2017 at Lynchburg General Hospital in Lynchburg, Va. with her, two sons, Hilson Atkins, Sr. and Nilson Atkins; daughter, Janice A. Benejan; grandsons, Gary L. Atkins and Jauron Atkins; her loving companion of over 20 years, John E. Cardwell; ex-husband, Albert Atkins; and a host of other family and friends at her side.
Susie was born September 13, 1928 in Trenton, New Jersey, a daughter of the late Hayes Rutherford Lee, Sr. and Maggie Scott Lee. Susie worked as a presser at Blue Buckle Overall Factory, a domestic, and eventually found her calling as a caregiver, taking care of those who could not care for themselves. She had once thought of pursuing a career in nursing, but chose to stay home to help in the care of an ailing mother.
She is survived in life by one sister, Maggie Katherine Lee; her two sons, Hilson L. Atkins, Sr. and Nilson Atkins of Forest, Va.; daughter, Janice A. Benejan of Lynchburg, Va.; her grandson, Gary L. Atkins of Lynchburg, Va.; her granddaughter, Tonikwa L. Atkins of Seat Pleasant, Md.; her granddaughter, Bria L. Atkins, Hampton, Va.; grandson, Hilson L. Atkins, Jr. of Lynchburg, Va.; grandson, Jauron J. Atkins of Lynchburg, Va. and Amir D. Atkins of Forest, Va.; and numerous nieces, great nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Hayes Rutherford Lee, Jr. and William Scott, Lee, Sr.

The family will receive friends on Monday, August 21, 2017 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, Va. 24502.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home.
