Russell Walter Pawlas, 55, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away from natural causes on December 2nd, 2025. He was the son of Robert and Rosemary Pawlas, of Bedford, Virginia.
Russell was born on October 26, 1970, at Fort Ord, in Monterey, California. He attended school at James Madison University, where he earned his Bachelor’s in Music. He then acquired his Master’s in Music Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Russell was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church. He was brought into the Catholic faith on Easter of 2023.
His interest in music began as a student at Liberty High School. His passion quickly flourished with his time marching for the Crossmen Drum Corps out of Allentown, Pennsylvania (1989, 1990, 1992). He also marched with the James Madison University Marching Royal Dukes. He took this wealth of experience and passion into numerous marching programs where he introduced many prospective musicians into the marching arts.
He lent his talents to many community bands and orchestras, including the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra, the Lynchburg Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Music program at the University of Lynchburg, and many more. He also shared his music and voice at numerous local restaurants and breweries.
Russell spent 31 years of his life dedicated to educating and furthering the music arts in and around Central Virginia; 20 of those years were spent in Lynchburg City Schools. In his tenure he inspired and supported thousands of students, many of whom welcomed him into their families and were welcomed into his. His joy and love for the arts was second to his love for each and every one of his students.
Outside of his love for music, Russell also loved hiking/backpacking with his partner, Gina, caring for his many animals, gardening, and going for scenic rides on his motorcycle.
Russell spent his life surrounded by the love of his family and friends. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and granddaughter, bringing laughter and love into their lives.
Russell is survived by his parents, Robert Wayne Pawlas and Rosemary C. Pawlas; his children, Emily Adele Hancock (Zachary Hancock) and Nathan Robert Pawlas (Abigail Lamison); his granddaughter, Lilah Rose Hancock; his sister, Rebecca Mary Miller (David Miller); his partner, Gina Marie DiCarlo.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you support your local public school music programs in honor of the legacy that Russell leaves behind.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025 at 11:00am, at Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church, reception to follow.
