Mr. Russell Joseph Otey, of Goode, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. Born on May 26, 1937, in Bedford, Virginia, Russell was lovingly raised from a young age by his aunt and uncle, Geneva Brown and Rudolph Brown.
Russell accepted Christ early in life and became a member of Oakmulgee Baptist Church. He attended Susie G. Gibson. He also attended community college where he received several certifications. Following his education, he proudly served his country in the United States Army.
After his military service, Russell took up a job as a truck driver. On April 25, 1964, he married Shirley Jane Mae Anderson in Bedford; they met at school through Russell’s close friend, Jerry Williams. He was employed with Rubatex at RR Donnolley for several years before retiring.
He found joy in many hobbies, including cars, motorcycles, traveling and watching wrestling matches that he used to attend in Roanoke. Russell loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He thoroughly enjoyed life and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Mr. Otey was preceded in death by his aunt and uncle, Geneva Brown and Rudolph Brown; his brother, Fred Otey Jr.; his sister, Frances Johnson; and four nephews, Douglas Otey, Fred Otey III, Travis Otey, and Michael Wright.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Shirley Otey; daughters, Gina Otey, Lorita Gail Terry (Bobby), and Gloria Turner; niece, Keisha Otey Clay (David); nephew, Frederick “Freddy” Otey (Mary); grandchildren, Jasmine Hubbard, Carey West, Lauren West, Courtney Turner, and Chad Turner; great-grandchildren, Jaylen, Alandre, Kamiyah, and Kaliyah; as well as a host of other cherished family members and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Oakmulgee Baptist Church, 2987 E Lynchburg Salem Turnpike, Bedford, VA. Interment will be at Mt. Rock Baptist Church Cemetery. His remains will lie in repose one hour prior to the service.
