Roy Cecil Martin

Roy Cecil Martin, 87, of Forest died peacefully at home on February 19, 2014. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was admired by all who met him as a Christian and a gentleman.

Mr. Martin was born in Franklin County to the late Alonza Andrew Martin and Ida May Prillaman Martin. He was a World War II veteran and served with the 7th Field Artillery Battalion in the European Theater.

He was employed by Amoco Oil Company as a District Manager, from which he retired after 28 years of service. Not one to sit idle for long, he began Martin\"™s Oil Equipment, which he owned and operated for 8 years before retiring again.

While living in Salem, VA, Mr. Martin was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he was elected a deacon. Upon being transferred to Richmond with Amoco Oil he became an active member of Branch\"™s Baptist Church. For the past 11 years, he attended Calvary Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Elisha\"™s Court Sunday school class.

Mr. Martin is survived by his wife of 69 years, Doris Sloan Martin, his daughters; Cynthia Jackson (Jay) of Santee, SC and Harriet Castanes (Angelo) of Forest, his grandchildren; Dr. J. Benjamin Jackson, III (Jill), Katy J. Handell (Kevin), Brooke Castanes and Alexis Castanes; as well as five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters; Erma Craddock of Ridgeway and Mary Lou Helms of Martinsville, also a son-in-law, Neil Johnson.

He was predeceased by his daughter Sandra Johnson as well as brothers, Ervin, Earl, Hubert, and Dewey Martin, and sisters, Edna Martin and Estelle McDonald.

Funeral services will be conducted in the Chapel of Calvary Baptist Church, 2:00 PM, Friday, February 21, 2014 with the Reverend Louis Beckwith officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 to 2:00 PM prior to the service. A private family burial will be held at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.
