Robert Donald Worrell

Robert Donald Worrell, 85, of Lynchburg, passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2025. He was the husband of Gayla Ashley Worrell.

Robert was born on September 29, 1940, in Pulaski, Virginia, the son of the late William Henry Martin Worrell and Hazel Clark Worrell. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Mark Worrell of Roanoke. Robert honorably served his country in the U.S. Army. He started his education career at Liberty High School in Bedford, where he taught and also coached football. Then on to Brookville High School for 3 years, then he transferred to JFHS as an assistant principal for 10 years and then finished his career as Principal of Liberty High School in Bedford for 7. After he retired Robert stayed active by teaching drivers ed for 25 years, helping coaching girls softball at JHS, Golf at LHS and he continued to officiate sports until he was 73 years old.(40 years)

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday, October 31, 2025, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg.

A Celebration of Robert's Life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 1, 2025, in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. Interment will follow at Virginia Memorial Park.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Robert's caregiver of two years, Rita Maschal, and the staff at Heritage Green for taking care of Robert for the last six weeks.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making memorial contributions to either the D-Day Memorial in Bedford or to the Lynchburg Humane Society.
