Robert Nathaniel Butler, Jr.

Mr. Robert Nathaniel Butler Jr. age 61, of Bedford, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday May 5, 2026, at Lynchburg General Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born October 12, 1964, to the late Robert and Macie Thomasson Butler.

In addition to his parents Robert was preceded in death by three sisters Rhonda who was an infant at death, Sherry Butler and Kelly Butler Hennessy and Brother-in-law Joseph Hennessy.

Robert attended Bedford County Public Schools and graduated from Liberty High School in 1983. From there Robert attended Saint Paul College in Lawrenceville, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree.

For several years Robert worked in the Bedford County Schools where he became coach of the girls’ teams. There he was affectionately known as “Coach B”. Robert later in life began working for Frito Lay, where he recently retired after twenty-five years.

Robert was known by his family as “Thanny”. He loved all of his relatives and would gladly assist in any way he could. He grew up being a Redskins fan and later became a Commanders fan. He would let you know that Washington was his team no matter what win or lose.

Robert is survived by his brother, Sidney Thomasson of Goodview, Va; nephews, Sherrod Dewayne Butler (Jenny) of Lexington, Va and Tierre A. McGinnis of Roanoke, Va; niece, Farah Hennessy, of Roanoke, Va.; one aunt, Mildred Smith; one uncle Bobby Thomasson; great-nieces and nephews, Sherrod D. Butler Jr. Of Lexington, Va, Kyla Butler of Lynchburg, Va, Desirae Butler, and Ebony Butler both of Lexington, Va; a very special friend, “Trish”; and other relatives and friends.

The family will be receiving friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford.
