Richard Fielding Stone, III, 79, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on Monday, April 13, 2025.

Richard was born December 2, 1946, in Lynchburg, Virginia, to the late Edley Craighill Nicholas Stone and Richard Stone, Jr. He graduated from E.C. Glass High School in 1965 and later earned his degree from Lynchburg College in 1969. He dedicated 27 years to a career in banking, retiring from BB&T after beginning in the savings and loan industry with Cooperative Building & Loan.

A proud veteran, Richard served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and gave generously of his time through Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity. Richard was also a life-long member of Oakwood Country Club.

Richard is survived by his wife, Jean Shotton Stone; his sister, Edley Stone Ramsey; his nephew, Chip Ramsey, and numerous other family members.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by an infant son.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and the Lynchburg Humane Society.

A memorial service will be held on April 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with military honors provided by American Legion Post 16 to follow in the church columbarium.
