“He fought the good fight; he finished the race; he kept the faith.” II Timothy 4:7---
Matthew 25:21—“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Patrick Jared Sherman (Toby), 82, of Jefferson Villas, Forest, VA, went home to be with his Lord, October 5, 2025. His life was a testament of hard work and dedication. He was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church and a loving and caring husband to Barbara Nicholson Sherman for 59 years.
He was born in Elkins, WVA, son of Pat and Mae Sherman. In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his treasured children: Patrick Jared Sherman, Jr. (P.J./Stephanie), his daughter Mishal Sherman Heckman (Missy/Paul), and his dear foster daughter, Tara, his wonderful flock of grandchildren and great-grandchildren and his dear sister. Marlyn Stamey, and her family.
Toby was a graduate of Fairmont State College where he earned his undergraduate degree in Education and the University of Virginia where he earned his M. Ed. His commitment extended far beyond his positions of teacher, coach, administrator in Bedford County Schools—serving as a mentor to faculty/staff, offering guidance and wisdom to many through his career as an educator. Upon his retirement from Bedford County after 35 years, he joined the Tharp Funeral Home family, where he served with sincere gratitude for 19 years.
He was an expert woodworker and avid football fan. He followed faithfully the Liberty University Flames and the UVA Hoos! And he and Barb devotedly attended all the grandchildren’s sporting activities. His many trips with Barb and the grandchildren were a highlight of his life—particularly those trips to Sight and Sound in Lancaster, PA and the many big family trips to the beach at Ocean Isle, NC.
For more than a decade he served as the leader of the T.T.M.G.—The Tuesday Morning Gang in Jefferson Villas, Forest, VA which was comprised of residents who served their community together by doing many household repairs, landscaping jobs, etc. for their neighbors. Many times, one could hear their laughter ringing out as they worked together outside at one job or another, serving their friends in the Villas.
Toby’s life demonstrated that a life lived for Christ and others is a life of serving and joy in the journey.
