Nicholas Stewart Mays, 76, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. Born on February 11, 1950, in Fort Riley, Kansas, Nicholas was the son of the late Charles Joseph Mays, Jr. and Ethel Zaki Mays.

Nicholas honorably served his country as a member of the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was an active participant in the American Legion Post 16 and was a charter member of the American Legion Post 16 Riders, demonstrating his continued commitment to veterans’ organizations.

He is survived by his children, Nicholas Stewart Mays, II, Tonia Dawson, Thea Rasel, Nicole Rasel, and Westley Rasel; twelve grandchildren; his sister, Theresa Mays; as well as his niece, Lindsey Mays; nephews Marshall Mays, Christopher Mays and Joseph Mays; and his beloved dog of seven years, Sarge.

In addition to his parents, Nicholas was preceded in death by his brother, Westley L. Mays.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Big Island, VA.
