Nada Mays Sweeney, wife of Judge William W. Sweeney of Lynchburg, VA died in her sleep on May 5th at Westminster Canterbury. She was born to Herman and Colelda Mays in Amherst County on November 12, 1932. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents and her three siblings; Marshall Mays, Wenonah Gilliam and Blanche Mays.
She is survived by her three children, Debra Sweeney of Elbert, CO, Dan Sweeney (Cindy) of Lynchburg and John Sweeney (Gigi) of Lynchburg and six grandchildren; Jeb Haley of CO, Sarah McGlothin (Aaron) of Carrboro, NC, Bradley Sweeney (Lauren) of Norfolk, VA, Anna Jamerson (Ryan) of Raleigh, NC, William Sweeney of VA Beach and Charles Sweeney also of VA Beach; three great grandchildren, Crosby McGlothlin (Sarah), Wyatt and Noah Sweeney (Bradley). She is also survived by Pat Haley and many nieces and nephews.
Nada graduated from Temperance High School in 1949 and immediately enrolled in summer school at James Madison College. After graduating in three years, she got a job with Appalachian Power Company as Home Economist working for two years before getting married.
Bill and Nada were married in 1953 at Court Street United Methodist Church. She remained a faithful member and was active in many facets of the church serving on The Council, chair of various committees and serving in many other ways. She was a member of the Lynchburg Woman's Club and served on many and varied committees.
Nada loved history and especially enjoyed serving as charter docent to Point of Honor and later to the Lynchburg Museum. She was on the Board of the Lynchburg Museum System.
Her family was first and foremost in her life followed by the love of homemaking.
The family would like to thank the staff on the 6th Floor of Drinkard for their tender loving care and kindness to our mother/grandmother.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 9th at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel at Westminster Canterbury with the Rev, Matthew Heckman officiating. A reception will follow the service 10:30 - 12:00 and will be held at Westminster Canterbury. She will be interred at Springhill Cemetery in a private ceremony.
Donations may be sent to the Lynchburg Humane Society in honor of her love of animals or to any charity that is special to you.
