Mildred Louise Willson

September 14, 1922 — May 17, 2019

Mildred Louise Willson, of Westminster Canterbury, Lynchburg, died May 17, 2019.  She was born September 14, 1922 in Amelia County, Virginia, a daughter of the late Joseph Bragg Willson and Virginia Louise Willson.

She was a graduate of Amelia County High School and Longwood University, graduating in the class of 1944. After starting work, she took additional courses at the Presbyterian Church School of Christian Education. For two years she taught young children at Dumbarton School in Henrico County, Richmond, VA, then became Director of Children’s Work/Director of Weekday Kindergarten for forty-two years in Presbyterian churches. She loved each church – Lakeside Church, Richmond; First Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, GA; presbytery, Dallas, TX; Westminster Church, Nashville, TN; St. Andrews Church, Atlanta, GA; Westminster Church, Greenville, SC; – from which she retired in 1988.

For twelve years she lived in Richmond before coming to Westminster Canterbury in November 2000.

Mildred is survived by a first cousin who was like a sister, Mary Willson Steele, and other cousins, Etta Lou Willson Loftin, Preston R. Willson (Janie), Larry Marshall (Sylvia), Robert Shelton, and Robert Stevens (Sherri).

A celebration of Mildred’s life will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the Commons at Westminster Canterbury with Rev. Peter Thompson and Rev. Kristie Miles officiating. A reception will follow.

We are grateful for the nursing staff and Hospice who seemed to have just the knack to make things better. Their warm and tender care will always be remembered.
