Michael Oliver Johnson, 72, of Lynchburg, Virginia, went to his heavenly home on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
Born on March 2, 1954, in Virginia, Michael was the son of the late Oliver Terrell Johnson and Doris Kennon Johnson. In addition to his parents, Michael was also preceded in death by his sisters, Karen Sue Johnson and Dara Johnson Padgett; father-in-law, Ray West, Jr.; mother-in-law, Doris Webber West; and brother-in-law, Kenneth West.
Michael was a graduate of Rustburg High School. He was a hardworking and dedicated family man who spent more than 30 years as co-owner of W&J painting contractors. Through the years, he built not only a successful career but also lasting relationships with those he worked for and alongside. Michael was a very generous and compassionate person who was always willing to help others.
Michael is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 51 years, Sharon West Johnson; his daughters, Amy Marie Johnson and Ashley Johnson Fields (Chris); grandchildren, Carter Michael Fields, Saylor Grace Fields, and Waverly Marie Filyaw; brother, Dennis T. Johnson (Dana); sister, Melanie Auxier (Robert “Bobby”); brother-in-law, Carlton West (Teresa); and sister-in-law, Carolyn West; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other family members and friends who will cherish his memory.
He will be remembered for the life he lived, the people he loved, and the many memories he leaves behind. His passion was taking care of his wife, children, and grandchildren, who he loved dearly. “Dad” and “Papa” were the titles he was most proud of.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg. A graveside service will immediately follow at 1:00 p.m. at Virginia Memorial Park, with Pastor Robert Auxier and Dr. Ed Gomes officiating.
