Maurice Elwood Clingempeel, Jr.

Maurice Elwood Clingempeel, Jr., age 81 of Lynchburg, Virginia passed away Monday, June 8, 2026 at Roane Medical Center in Harriman, Tennessee. He was born May 3, 1945, in Lynchburg, Virginia to Maurice Elwood Clingempeel and Frances Louise (Brightwell) Clingempeel.

Elwood joined the US Army in 1966 and served for 3 years as a Military Policeman. He got his GED in the Army and received an Associate’s Degree from Central Virginia Community College in 1977. He loved fishing, reading, drinking coffee and sitting on the front porch with a good friend, listening to YouTube with his faithful cat Annie by his side, and perfecting whatever art form he was experimenting with at the time. Over the years, he worked many jobs – exterminator, welder, carpenter, but more than anything, Elwood was an artist. He gave away more of his art than he ever sold or kept for himself and was quoted in a 1987 Lynchburg News and Advance article as saying “I guess everyone wants to leave a little something behind.”

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Holladay “Holly” Miller Clingempeel and a sister, Maurine Clingempeel. He is survived by his daughter, Kelly (Keith) Skubisz of Rockwood, TN; and son, Maurice Clingempeel of Rockford, IL; sister, Sandra Williams of Lynchburg, TN; nephew, John Williams of Lynchburg; and five grandchildren, Sarah Rachel, and Emily Clingempeel, and Madison and Nathaniel Skubisz.

A celebration of life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg. Please bring a story to share, if you have one, and join in honoring the little something he left behind in each of our lives.
