Maryan Lorraine Marshall, born January 18, 1940, in New Haven, Connecticut, passed away on December 29, 2025.
She was predeceased by her parents, Lillian Louise Merz and Rush Porter Marshall.
Maryan was a dedicated lifelong scholar and educator. She received her undergraduate degree from Connecticut College and went on to earn her Ph.D. from Yale University. She pursued a distinguished academic career, serving as a professor at Randolph College and later at Central Virginia Community College, where she was deeply committed to her students and to the pursuit of learning.
Maryan was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Lynchburg and valued the sense of fellowship and community she found there.
In addition to her academic and professional accomplishments, Maryan embraced a spirit of vitality later in life and went on to earn medals in swimming through the Commonwealth Games — a reflection of her determination, discipline, and joy in personal achievement.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lynchburg Humane Society in her honor.
A service will be held at Westminster Canterbury Weissert Chapel on Tuesday, January 6, 2026 at 11 AM.
