Mary Higgenbotham

Mary Higginbotham, 87, of Amherst, Virginia, transitioned peacefully into the arms of our Heavenly Father on September 5, 2026.

She was born November 26, 1938, to the late William Diggs, Jr and Virginia Dillard Diggs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Rady Arthur Higginbotham; two daughters Helen Foxx and Margavent Diggs; two brothers Charles Diggs and Hershey Diggs; two sisters Annie Loving and Sally Broady; son-in-law Peter Aron; granddaughter Mary Alice Garland; and grandson Keshawn Higginbotham.

Mary had a vibrant spirit and found great joy in life’s simple pleasures. Among her favorite pastimes were visiting Goodwill to discover unique treasures and playing the lottery, always embracing the excitement and hope of the next drawing. She was a deeply devoted mother and grandmother who poured boundless love, wisdom and warmth into her children and grandchildren, always considering them to be her truest jackpot in life. Beyond her favorite pastimes, Mary’s heart belonged entirely to her family. Her roles as a mother and a grandmother were the ones she treasured above all else. She wrapped her children and grandchildren in an unconditional love that served as the foundation of their lives, and her happiest moments were those spent surrounded by the laughter and love of her family.

Mary was a woman of rare authenticity, known by all who knew her as a wonderfully honest and straight forward person. She spoke the truth with kindness and lived her life with an admirable clarity and integrity. Mary was a woman of deep and enduring faith who loved God with all her heart. Her devotion to the Lord was the quiet strength that guided her through life, shaping her into the wonderful person she was.
