Mary Douglas

Without notice on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, round about 2:06 pm, God dispatched angels from heaven to escort Mary Burnley Richeson Douglas from her earthly home to her eternal mansion in the sky. Mary entered this earthly realm on January 18, 1936, to the late Robert and Matilda Richeson. On April 22, 1957, she was joined in holy matrimony to the late, Clarence H. Douglas. Who would know that she would celebrate her home going on her 58th Anniversary with her late husband in heaven. She was preceded in death by three daughters, Isabel, Martha and Barbara Hopkins, two brothers, Roosevelt and Leonard Richeson and a daughter-in-law Sally Haynes.

Mary accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Piney Hill Baptist Church, Amherst, VA.

Mary was a good-hearted soul, who was motivated by her love and compassion for others. Her gift of compassion and patience was especially shown for kids.

Mary leaves to cherish her memories two devoted and loving daughters, Mary (Lou Lou) Rucker, Lynchburg, VA; Sandra (Kay Kay)/(Wayne) Douglas , Amherst, VA; two loving and devoted sons, Clay Hopkins, Jr., Buena Vista, VA and Clarence Douglas, Jr., Amherst, VA and one step daughter, Viola Sandidge, Amherst, VA and step sons Oliver Brown, Buena Vista, VA and James Dillard, Amherst, VA, a loving sister, Florence (Joe) Douglas and a devoted brother, James (Elanor)Richeson. Eight grandchildren, Krystal Mays, Aaron Rucker, LD Douglas, Jason Hopkins, Linda Sydor, GL Sandidge, Simone Sandidge, and Craig Smith. Two loving sisters-in-law; Doris Douglas and Faye Richeson. A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A celebration of Mary's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 27, 2026, at Tharp Funeral Home, Madison Heights. Interment to follow at Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
