Marie Weill Sherman, a Lynchburg resident since January, 1959, and widow of the late John H. Sherman Jr., died on August 15, 2010 after a short illness.
Marie was born in Harrisburg PA on April 20, 1918, a daughter of the late Esther Gross Weill and Eugene G. Cohen, and adoptive father Samuel Daube Weill.
She is survived by one sister, Sydne Morrison; two daughters, Mary E. Sherman of Norcross GA and Ida S. Cole of New York NY; three grandchildren, Janis M Taube (and husband Alexander Hillel) of Baltimore MD, H. Joseph Ramagli III of Forest Hills NY, Jean Paul Taillon of Northeast Harbor ME; great-granddaughter Dylan Rose Hillel; cousins Michael Littmann of Las Vegas and Frank Weill of New York City; and several nieces and nephews. Extended family includes Susan Finnerty, Michael Silvester, Matthew Silvester, Dan and Kelly Silvester, and Christopher Silvester.
Marie grew up and attended public schools in Buffalo NY, after which she graduated from Marjorie Webster Junior College in Washington DC. She worked in Dallas as secretary to the plant manager of Willard Storage Battery Company for several years, finally returning to Buffalo to work as a riveter at Curtis Wright Airplane Company supporting the war effort. In 1943 she married John Sherman, who served in World War II. After the war, they lived in several locations as John pursued his graduate school studies, finally settling in Syracuse NY where John had a position as an electrical engineer with General Electric Co. While in Syracuse, Marie worked as a legal secretary at GE and attended Syracuse University. In 1959 they found their way to Lynchburg VA when General Electric relocated John and his family.
She worked at Lynchburg General Hospital in the Admissions Department and the Business Office for many years after they arrived in Lynchburg.
She loved to play golf at Oakwood Country Club where she was a member for many years.
Marie often volunteered for events at Lynchburg Fine Arts Center eventually becoming involved with the Lynchburg Community Concerts Association where she served as Membership Chair for many years. Membership in Community Concerts was at its peak when she was serving in this capacity. She was a member of First Unitarian Church in Lynchburg VA and has been involved in many aspects of church life including Women\"™s Alliance and outreach efforts such as Meals on Wheels.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm August 28, 2010, at First Unitarian Church, 818 Court Street, Lynchburg, VA.
