With a heart both tender and steadfast, we gather to honor the life of Marie Shelton, a distinguished educator, devoted Christian, and cherished member of the Lynchburg community, who passed away peacefully on April 26, 2026, in Lynchburg, Virginia. Born on January 14, 1939, Marie’s journey began in the very town that would come to know her profound contributions and unwavering spirit.
Marie was the beloved daughter of the late Robert and Bessie (Plenty) Shelton, and one among ten siblings, leaving behind one surviving brother, John Shelton of Washington, D.C., whose steadfast presence undoubtedly served as a wellspring of familial strength. Her academic pursuits led her first to Dunbar High School, from which she graduated in 1957, and then to Hampton Institute, where she studied for one year before embarking on a varied path shaped by both work and encouragement from those who recognized her potential. Embracing education with renewed passion, Marie attained her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from West Virginia State College in 1965.
Her noble dedication to nurturing young minds was first manifested in her role as a 10th grade Biology teacher at Dunbar High School. From 1965 to 1970, she inspired many students through her commitment to education. As the winds of change swept through Lynchburg in 1970 with the integration of schools, Marie transitioned to Sandusky Middle School, where she taught 8th grade science with honor and distinction for over two decades until her retirement. Her academic achievements were further distinguished in 1972 when she became one of the pioneering African American women to earn a Master of Science Degree in Teaching from the esteemed Randolph-Macon Women’s College—a testament to her pioneering spirit and intellectual vigor.
Beyond the classroom, Marie's life was a testament to service and compassion. Following her retirement, she devoted countless hours volunteering in health trial studies, exemplifying her enduring commitment to the welfare of others. Her Christian faith was both a cornerstone and a beacon, guiding her active involvement in numerous Christian ministries and national conferences, where her spirit of fellowship and faith flourished. In recent years, Marie found joy and camaraderie among friends at the Yoder Center in Lynchburg, contributing her time and energy to assembling “Shoe Box” kits for military families in need around the globe—a gesture emblematic of her generous heart and unwavering kindness, sustained until her health declined.
