Margaret Helen Jenks Sellick, 90, passed away peacefully on October 3rd in Lynchburg, Virginia. Margaret was born in Rochester, New York and raised in Westfield, New Jersey, but called Lynchburg home for the past 65 years.
She was a devoted wife, mother, a warm friend, and a beloved member of her community.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband of 63 years, John “Jack” Sellick. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and shared purpose. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Thomas L. Jenks, and her sister, Susan Getter.
She is survived by her daughters, Sarah S. Meyer (Glenn) and Martha S. Link (Ken), and her son, John D. Sellick (Debra). She is also survived by her twin sister, Marilynn F. Nulton, and her brother, Robert S. Jenks, and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Margaret was a proud and loving grandmother and great-grandmother to numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense joy.
Margaret’s unwavering and remarkable Faith in God was evidenced by the courageous and fearless approach taken to any obstacle, opportunity, or adventure encountered in her life’s journey. Her gentle spirit, kind heart, and quiet strength were a blessing to all who knew her. Margaret’s legacy of love, service, and generosity will live on through the many lives she touched.
She had a deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. She found joy in knitting, cooking, gardening, and singing in the church choir. Her compassion extended beyond her family to her community — she volunteered at the Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center and the Virginia Baptist Hospital for many years, and lovingly donated hundreds of hand-knit baby hats over the years to newborns and families in need. Margaret was famously known by all who loved her as the “cookie lady” - baking was her therapy and she always required you to take “one for each hand”.
She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
A memorial service will be held at Westminster Canterbury Chapel in Lynchburg on Saturday, October 11th at 2:00 p.m., with a small reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Margaret’s life.
Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
