M. Pride Wingfield

M. Pride Wingfield, 96, of Bedford, passed away in Bedford Memorial Hospital on October 17, 2013. Born April 6, 1917 in Bedford County; he was a son of the late Charles Ernest Wingfield and Coral B. Wingfield Johnson. Pride had been a resident of Oakwood Health and Rehabilitation for the last six years; a heartfelt thank you to his many caregivers. Mr. Wingfield belonged to Bedford Baptist Church. He retired from Piedmont Label Company in 1982 after 45 years of service.

Pride was a veteran of World War II \"" a \"Bedford Boy\" \"" stationed in England. He played baseball with the European Theater of Operations. He was a lover of sports; an avid golfer and member of Bedford Country Club. Mr. Wingfield was a member of the 29th Division Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Bedford International Alliance, and formerly the BPO Elks.

In addition to his parents, Pride was predeceased by his wife, Rebecca Lockard Wingfield; sisters, Bland W. Lazenby and Helen W. Rucker; and a brother, Ray A. Wingfield. He is survived by his daughter Mary Rebecca Wingfield and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 AM, Monday, October 21, 2013 in Greenwood Cemetery with Rev. Dr. David L. Henderson officiating. Military Honors will be provided by American Legion Post 16. The family will receive friends Sunday, October 20, 2013 from 2 PM until 4 PM at Tharp Funeral Home.
