Loretta Lee Davis Mayhew was born in Lynchburg, VA, on December 23, 1935, the daughter of the late Eugene and Ruby Davis, and stepdaughter of the late Jessolyn Davis. She passed away peacefully at home on January 5, 2026.
Loretta spent her clerical and bookkeeping career at Guggenheimer Dept. Store, Piedmont Power Equipment, and Leggett; she retired from the City of Lynchburg Treasurer’s Office. She was an active member of Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, members of her church, and monthly luncheons with her E.C. Glass High School class of 1954. She also enjoyed doing hand embroidery and spent countless hours completing jigsaw puzzles, Sudoku, and crossword puzzles.
Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, George Lee Mayhew. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Mayhew; her son, George Edward Mayhew (Nancy); and her son, Derrick Mayhew (Robyn). She is also survived by four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and her brother, Preston Davis (Loretta).
The family will welcome visitors to celebrate Loretta’s life on Friday, January 9, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, 220 Breezewood Dr., Lynchburg, VA. A funeral service lead by Rev. Adam White will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory. The family will hold a private service at Fort Hill Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church, 4660 Fort Ave, Lynchburg, VA 24502, or to the Salvation Army, 2215 Park Ave, Lynchburg, VA 24501.
