Lois Wood McWane passed away peacefully Saturday, June 17, 2017, in her home at Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg, Virginia. Born November 13, 1933, in Appomattox, she was the daughter of the late Holcomb Thornhill Wood and Vara Mitchell Wood.
Lois is survived by her sisters, C. Faye Wood, Kitty Vaughan Hickman (Butch); her brother, H.T. Wood; her sons, Abram Craddock “Abe” McWane, Jr. and Paul Thornhill McWane (Anna); her daughter, Yancey McWane Hudson (Terry); and her grandchildren, Abram Craddock “Mac” McWane, III (Erin), Holly Anne McWane, and Katherine Farley McWane.
In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by her husband, A. Craddock McWane, Senior, and her sister Sandra Farrar.
Lois was a graduate of Appomattox High School and attended Ferrum College, where she was named “Miss Ferrum.” She was employed for many years in the Lynchburg City School System, where she worked both in the library and as a Teacher’s Assistant at Linkhorne Elementary. She was active in the community as a member of the Lynchburg Junior League, Boonsboro Country Club, and a board member at the William’s Home. Lois was also a devoted member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where she spent many years as a Sunday School teacher. Lois enjoyed gardening, Smith Mountain Lake, her long-time bridge group, and spending time with her friends and family, especially her three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends in the Hume Room at Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg, Virginia from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, 2017. A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lynchburg, Virginia on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 11 a.m. with Reverend William J. Watson, III officiating. The family will also receive friends at a reception following the service.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff on the 5th and 6th floor Hearthside for the loving care they provided to Lois throughout her time at Westminster.
