Linwood Hudson Jennings transitioned to heaven peacefully on Friday, October 10, 2025. He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, on January 11, 1935, to Margaret Hudson Jennings and Leroy Randolph Jennings.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Connie Jennings; his parents; four brothers, Leroy “L.R.” Jennings, Warren D. Jennings, Harman Jennings, and Donald Jennings; and his sister, Dorothy “Dot” J. Bibb.
He is survived by his loving wife, Myrtle P. Jennings; daughter, Dawn Edwards (Morry, Ph.D.); son, Steve Jennings (Lori); and Myrtle’s daughters, Teresa Gunter (Ralph), Elizabeth Ramsey (Todd), Alison Crehore (Andy), and Paula Kepel (Daniel). He is also survived by grandchildren Ryan Lindsey, Micah (Becky) Edwards, Melissa Neuman (Phil), and Rebecca Ham (Aaron); great-grandchildren Alicia (Nolan) Shockley and Nick Lindsey (fiancée Jaycie Callaway); many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by grandchildren and great-grandchildren through his extended family and by a very special friend of the family, Peggy Thompson.
Linwood led by example, showing through his actions what it means to live a good and meaningful life. His kindness and love touched everyone he met. He had a gentle heart and an easy laugh, and he made people feel seen, valued, and cared for. He loved his family and friends deeply, and the love he gave so freely will stay with us always.
With his first wife, Connie, Linwood lovingly raised their two children, Dawn and Steve. They were married for 55 years and together created a home filled with love, laughter, and faith. Dawn and Steve had the most wonderful, loving, and committed parents who supported and guided them every step of the way. Together, they shared many family vacations and adventures, traveling across the country and creating countless memories along the way. After both he and Myrtle had lost their spouses, the two childhood friends reconnected and were blessed with 13 wonderful years of marriage. They shared a beautiful life together filled with love, their dog Poppy and travel—especially their trips to visit family in Michigan.
Linwood had a remarkable gift for mathematics, first noticed by an early teacher who encouraged him to pursue it. That love of numbers shaped his life and career, leading to over 40 years with the Mead Corporation (later Rock-Tenn). His work took him to divisions in Virginia, Indiana, Ohio, New Hampshire, and Michigan before returning home to Virginia. He was respected not only for his intelligence and dedication but also for his kindness, humility, and good humor. Even in retirement, Linwood remained connected to his former colleagues, attending gatherings up until just months ago—a testament to the deep friendships and respect he built throughout his life.
He was a devoted member of One in Christ Church in Forest, Virginia, where his quiet faith and steadfast spirit were a blessing to all who knew him.
Linwood was never one to sit idly. He loved adventure and enjoyed snow skiing well into his 80s. He brought joy to everyone around him with his warmth, laughter, and faith-filled presence.
The service will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at Tharp Funeral Home on Breezewood Drive. Family greeting will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by the service at 1:30 p.m.
Linwood is now at peace in the loving arms of his Savior, remembered for his unwavering kindness, gentle spirit, and the legacy of love he leaves behind.
