Kathy Marion Lake Urquhart, 78, of Lynchburg, VA, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2026, at Westminster Canterbury. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.

Kathy Marion Lake was born August 3, 1948, in Queens, New York, to Edwin and Catherine Lake. She went on to attend the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she studied Occupational Therapy, and met her life partner and future husband, Gary. She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority.

After moving to Lynchburg in 1974, Kathy spent nearly 30 years working as an Occupational Therapist for the Central Virginia Training Center, Lynchburg City Schools, and Appomattox Public Schools. There, she honed her physical and mental supporting skills while showing a creative and technological flair, designing and crafting adaptive hardware that allowed those with sensory issues to interact better with the world around them. Helping children, especially pre-school age, with disabilities was her life long passion.

Once the kids were out of the house, Kathy and Gary embarked on numerous adventures around the world, living for several years in Lancaster, England, and Tokyo, Japan. Even while abroad, Kathy continued her mission to help those with physical and cognitive disabilities by volunteering her services to the local and expat communities.

Kathy was a brilliant, fun, and caring person who embraced life and never took herself too seriously. She was particularly proud of the young people she inspired to become therapists and continue her legacy of helping. She will be missed by all those lucky enough to have known her.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Gary, of Lynchburg; her sons Greg (Wendy), of Richmond, VA, and Jeff (Lacey), of Charlottesville, VA; her three grandchildren, Sadie, Lucie, and Jackson; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to give special thanks to the tireless staff at Westminster Canterbury’s Canterbury Gardens Memory Support Unit and Drinkard Healthcare for their excellent care and support.

A Celebration of Kathy’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, September 12th. 2026, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lynchburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org
