June Wheeler Mays

June Wheeler Mays, 71, of Amherst Virginia went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 5, 2026.

June leaves behind a family who loved her dearly and who will continue to honor her memory. Born on December 24, 1951, to the late Homer Haywood Wheeler and Lula Maddox Wheeler. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Danny Wheeler; and her sister, Melissa Wheeler. Maternal grandparents, Jimmy and Mary Maddox and paternal grandparents, Otha and Mary Virginia Wheeler.

She was a devoted wife, loving mother, and cherished nana. Her greatest joy in life was her family. She loved deeply, gave selflessly, and was always there for the people she loved.

The love and guidance she gave her family will remain with them for generations to come.

June is survived by her husband of 53 years, Carroll Mays Jr; her son Travis Mays (Dana), and her daughter Christal Viar; grandchildren Tristen, Mason, Bryce, Dalanie, Gabrielle, Alexzandra and lzabella; brothers Edward Wheeler and Haywood Wheeler; sister Debbie Butler; and sister in laws Pat Stinnett and Nancy Martin. June is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and family that loved her dearly.

June was a lifelong member of Clifford Baptist Church and a woman of strong faith who loved Jesus and trusted in Him throughout her life. Although our hearts are broken by her passing, we find peace in knowing that she is now in the presence of her Savior, free from the struggles of this life and rejoicing in her eternal home.

She had a beautiful and creative spirit. Known by friends and loved ones as very artistic, she found immense joy in things that allowed her creativity to bloom. She had an appreciation for beauty and artistry while bringing her own special touch to the lives of those around her.

Her earthly life may have come to an end, but her legacy she leaves behind endures in the art she created, the gardens she nurtured, and the lives she touched along her journey.

Until we meet again, she will remain forever loved, forever remembered, and forever missed.

A service honoring June's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., at Clifford Baptist Church on Saturday, September 12, 2026. Reverend Jeffrey Campbell, Reverend Dr. Michael Fitzgerald, and Reverend Clyde Mawyer will be officiating.
