June Irvine Torbert

June Irvine Torbert of Lynchburg, 83, died Thursday, March 3, 2011.

She was the loving wife of the late, Dr. John Vernon Torbert, Jr. She was the daughter of the late John Woodward Irvine and Laura Anderson Irvine. She was born in Roanoke, VA on May 12, 1927 and grew up in Newport News where her father was Chief Engineer of Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock.

June was a graduate of Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA and graduated from Medical Technology School at the University of Virginia. She worked as a medical technologist at the university hospital where she met John Torbert.

After Dr. Torbert finished his internship in New York and residency in Baltimore, they moved to Lynchburg in 1959. She was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church. She was a devoted wife and mother whose broad knowledge of sports, religion and politics always made for interesting conversation. Her love of books inspired her to become a librarian at Randolph Macon Woman\"™s College where she worked for a number of years before becoming a grandmother. June was a passionate and devoted \"Mimi\" who was loved deeply by her grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn T. Foster and husband, Jimmy of Lynchburg, and Anne T. Williamson and husband, Carlton of Whiteville NC; and her three grandchildren, Adam Stapleton of Lynchburg, Emily Williamson of Gainesville, Florida, and Forrest Williamson of Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

The family will receive friends Sunday, March 6, 2011 at Westminster Canterbury in \"The Commons\" room, 501 VES Road from 3-5 pm. Interment will take place in Spring Hill Cemetery on Monday, March 7, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with the Dr. John M. Scholer officiating. Memorial contributions may be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 1215 VES Road, Lynchburg 24503 or Westminster Canterbury Fellowship Fund, 501 VES Road Lynchburg, VA 24503.
