Joyce Lewis Newman, 73, of Lynch Station, Virginia, departed this life on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. She was born on January 27, 1953, to the late Joseph Maynard Toms and Kathleen Hodges Toms.

A devoted Christian woman, and member of Crosspoint Church, Altavista, Joyce loved the Lord deeply and found joy in the simple beauty of God’s creation. She lived her life with strength, and a servant’s heart, always offering care, support, and encouragement to those around her.

Joyce was known for her strong work ethic and unwavering love for her family and friends. She treasured time spent with those she loved and created lasting memories.

After retirement, Joyce embraced her love for travel and enjoyed exploring places abroad. She also found happiness in antique shopping with friends.

Joyce also had a wonderful sense of humor and cherished the simple moments in life. One favorite memory shared by her family was her love for egg rolls and egg drop soup from King’s Island. She and her son, Clay, even managed to get into a little trouble together when he brought her favorite meal to the hospital, a memory that continues to bring smiles and laughter to those who loved her.

In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by four brothers, Jimmy Toms, Frank Toms, Jack Toms, and Joe Toms (Linda); one sister, Mary Brogan; and one devoted friend, Helen Hamlett.

Those left to cherish her memory include her caring son, whom she loved dearly, Berkley “Clay” Lewis and wife Karen; two grandchildren, Dallas V. Lewis and Gavin T. Cox; one sister, Lori Simmons; one brother-in-law, David Brogan; special friends, Leann Hendrick, Karen Sherwood, and Irene Bruce; one cat, Bella, as well as many nieces, nephews, church family, and friends.

At the request of Joyce, the family will hold a private memorial celebration at a later time.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg is assisting the family.
