Joseph McCray Slaughter departed this life Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born November 24, 1956 to the late Ludie Slaughter and Guy Slaughter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers Phillip, Louis, Michael, and Kenneth Slaughter.
Joseph effectually called Joe was employed by Price Masonry where he worked as a Brick Mason. He was a Bell Ringer for the Salvation Army. He also was a member of First Baptist Church of South Lynchburg. Joe attended Power of Praise Ministry Church under Pastor Carrington Banks until his health declined. Joe loved to sing, some of his favorite songs were “Life is a ball game”, “Thank God for mama”, and “I miss you.”
He is survived by his wife Gloria Davis Slaughter, one son Joseph Rucker (Gretta), four step- children, one granddaughter LuDhay Rucker, Two sisters Katie Nowlin and Phyllis Slaughter, one brother Larry Slaughter (Deborah), his heartthrob girls Nannie and Sissy, and a host of other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday December 14, 2023, at Tharp Funeral Home Chapel Lynchburg. A visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to service.
