John Thomas Drewry
John Thomas Drewry, 90, of Madison Heights passed peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of the late Frances Clemmons Drewry for 57 years.
Born Dec. 18, 1921 in Buckingham County, John was a son of the late William Andrew Drewry and the late Lillian Huddleston Drewry.
In addition to his wife, John was predeceased in death by his brothers: Andrew, John, and Ernest; his son-in-law, Larry K. Holt, and friend Pauline Clemmons.
John is survived by his devoted daughter, Shelby Drewry Holt of Forest, three grandchildren: Ellen Pardee and her husband, Jason, Julie Baumann and her husband, Michael, all of Lynchburg, and Drew K. Holt of San Pedro, CA.; and two great-grandchildren: Kailyn and Taylor Baumann; and three special neighbors: Jane Burks, Joyce Newcomb, and Doug Stinson.
John was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was lovingly called Papa by his grand and great-grandchildren. John served his country as a member of the United States Army during World War II. John enjoyed working with his hands and was always exploring new hobbies. He became an expert at woodworking and was especially talented in stained glass making. He was an avid camper and enjoyed camping in his Airstream over the years with his favorite spot being Otter Creek, where he and Frances made many friends throughout the years.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, October 1, 2012 at 11:00 AM in Spring Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Robert Putt officiating. Military rites will be provided by American Legion Post 16.
