John Emmett Riordan, III

September 8, 1953 — July 26, 2025

John Emmett Riordan, III, 71, passed away peacefully with family by his side on July 26, 2025, at Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg, Virginia. Born on September 8, 1953, at Fort Benning, Georgia, John – affectionately known as “Chip” – lived a life marked by strength, resilience, and deep love for his family and friends.

He was the son of the late John Emmett Riordan, Jr. and Claudia Anne Birchmore Riordan.

John was a devoted father to five children: Preston Riordan (Christina), Corey Rowan (Tiffany), Benton Riordan, Victoria Riordan, and Jack Riordan. He is lovingly remembered by his grandson, Gabriel Rowan.

In addition, he is survived by his five siblings: Melissa Hudson (Joe), Harold Riordan (Renee), Susan Green (Bill), Cathy Howard (Ernie), and Janie Merritt (Larry); his cousin Melinda Maksymowicz; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A graduate of Clemson University, John began his career at Framatome and later worked for The Harrington Corporation (now a division of IPEX). John’s presence, guidance, and unwavering support will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A private burial will be held by the family in Seneca, South Carolina. A Celebration of Life for John will be held on Saturday, September 20th, from 2:00–6:00 P.M. at Irvington Spring Farm, 236 Irvington Springs Road, Lynchburg, VA 24503. The family encourages all who knew John to please come and share their stories.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Westminster Canterbury for the loving care provided to Chip.
