Joann Alyce Lewis, 62, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully at her home on September 7, 2025, after an 18-month battle with cancer. Her strength, grace, and unwavering love for her family remained constant throughout her journey.
Born in Glens Falls, New York, Joann was the daughter of Theda Ghizzoni (Barnes), who survives her, and the late Michael Ghizzoni. She grew up with her brother, Michael Ghizzoni, and carried a deep appreciation for learning and the arts throughout her life.
Joann graduated Magna cum Laude from Middlebury College, where she studied music, mastering the oboe, and foreign languages—fields that reflected her vibrant intellect and creative spirit. She began her professional life as a teacher but chose to devote herself fully to raising her children, a role she cherished above all others.
On August 16, 1986, Joann married the love of her life, Christopher Lewis, in Glens Falls. Together, they built a warm and loving home, raising three daughters—Michelle Kulwicki, Allison Lewis, and Kellie Miller—each of whom carries forward Joann’s legacy of compassion, curiosity, and excellence.
An avid gardener, Joann earned certification as a Master Gardener and was pursuing a Virginia Master Naturalist certification. She also embraced new musical pursuits by taking up piano, filling her home with fresh melodies and joy.
She is survived by her husband, Christopher; her daughters, Michelle, Allison, and Kellie, and five grandchildren, Lydia, Evelyn, Cassidy, Hayden, and Madigan; her mother, Theda; and her brother, Michael. Her memory will live on in the lives she touched and the beauty she cultivated—both in her garden and her family.
A Celebration of Life reception will be held on Wednesday, September 17th from 12:00 to 1:00 PM at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, VA. All who knew Joann are welcome to attend and honor her remarkable life.
