Jill M. Lucas, PhD

Jill Marie Lucas, 41, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on April 2, 2026. She was the daughter of Brad and Julie Lucas.

Jill was born on November 6, 1984, in Rockford, IL. In early 1987, the family moved to Cape Coral, FL. Jill attended schools in Cape Coral and Fort Myers before attending Furman University for her undergraduate degree. She earned a Masters degree in Exercise and Sport Science/Exercise Physiology at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, followed by a PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of Georgia. Since completing her doctorate in 2013, Jill has been a professor at the University of Lynchburg.

Jill is survived by her father and mother, Brad and Julie Lucas, and brother Dave (Ashley) Lucas. She has a number of aunts, uncles, and cousins in multiple states.

Jill exemplified her family’s values including self-sufficiency, creativity, and craft. Following in her father’s footsteps, Jill loved tackling DIY projects to make her home perfectly her own. Like her mother, she cherished showing her love for others through a wonderful meal, hosting family and friends for special events, book club gatherings, or a weekend chat.

Jill’s two biggest passions in life were undoubtedly athletics and the continual pursuit of knowledge. She relished a good challenge in either of these domains, and was accomplished in both.

Her passion for running from an early age led to her joining the cross-country team at Furman University, and later to partnering with leaders at her alma mater to develop the Furman Institute of Running and Scientific Training (F.I.R.S.T.). For many years, Jill and the Furman team hosted runners from around the globe for intensive week-long retreats centered around the study and advancement of the science of running. Jill’s enjoyment of these events was surpassed only by the excitement and gratitude of the many attendees, who frequently planned their attendance a year or more in advance.

As Professor and Academic Chair of the departments of Exercise Physiology and Public Health at the University of Lynchburg, Jill’s students and peers loved her for the enthusiasm, expertise, and consistency she brought to teaching, research, service, and advising. Their outpourings of praise and support for Jill recently inspired both a promotion and recognition via the University’s Award for Excellence in Academic Advising. She further served as a chair of many faculty committees and as a Faculty mentor for the softball team. Jill loved seeing students succeed in school, sports, and life, and could often be found in the bleachers cheering for her student-athletes.

A devoted daughter and sister, Jill’s quick laugh and dry humor brought light to any room. She was a loyal friend, always ready to help, and mindful of small but important details that could make all the difference. She was a supporter of her local community, a lover of the outdoors, and a lady with an enviable shoe and handbag collection.

Jill’s favorite flowers are peonies. In lieu of contributions, please smile and remember Jill’s smiling face when you see a peony.

Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
