Jan Pettypool Johnson, of Lynchburg, passed away on October 20, 2026. She was predeceased by her parents, Cleo and Arlie Pettypool; a daughter, Elizabeth Johnson Boatner; and a brother, Jay Martin Poole. Her survivors include her son, Kerke Johnson (Lynne) of Williamsburg; son-in-law, Ivan Boatner of Knoxville, TN; and granddaughters, Haley, Peyton, and Margaret.
She was born on February 13, 1936, in Clinton, OK and raised in Tulsa. Upon marrying David in 1956, Jan left The University of Tulsa before completing her undergraduate degree, which she later received from Sweet Briar College. Jan commuted to Chapel Hill, NC in the 1970's to study further, and she earned her Masters in Library Science degree from UNC. This accomplishment led her to library positions at both Sweet Briar College and Randolph-Macon Woman's College, where she spent most of her career as a Collection Development Librarian in charge of book acquisitions. After retirement Jan remained in Lynchburg and eventually moved into Westminster-Canterbury, where she had many friends and enjoyed volunteering.
Raised by schoolteacher parents and inquisitive by nature, Jan always promoted academics and fair play at home and wherever she went. A lover of classical music and a musician herself (flute and piano), she could often be found at local concerts and recitals. Her interest in playing games ranged from tennis to bridge, the latter being a constant in her life for decades that she enjoyed as much for the social aspect as the challenge of the game. Not generally one for spectator sports on TV, she did make an exception for Tar Heel basketball and professional tennis. Reading and book clubs were always important to Jan, and she was ever ready with a book recommendation for her friends and family.
Jan was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for many years where she served on the altar guild and volunteered frequently to help with receptions and hospitality.
