James Wiltz Macdonald Jr. “Mac,” 67, of Forest, Virginia, originally from Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly on September 1, 2026. He was born June 23, 1959, to the late James and Margaret Macdonald.
Mac graduated from Holy Cross Catholic School, attended Virginia Military Institute (VMI), and later graduated from Lynchburg College. He dedicated nearly 40 years to Appomattox Lime Company. He was a hardworking, tough, manly man who loved playing golf, frisbee golf, watching movies, and spending time with his family. He loved his family deeply and was always someone they knew they could count on. He especially loved his grandchildren and was one of their biggest fans. If you saw him out, there was a good chance he was at one of his grandkids’ sporting events, cheering them on.
Mac married Linda Macdonald on November 17, 2007.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Macdonald; his children and their spouses, Jesse and Danielle Macdonald, Ellie and Orlando Long, Jack and Michelle Macdonald, Melissa and Steve Davis, Danny and Trina Carter, Angela Carter and Jerry Meadows, and golf son Hunter and Maggie Ayers; his grandchildren, Gabrielle, Ryen, Kael, Lydia, Gino, Vincent, Connor, Riley, Ryan (Caitlin), Kayla, Carter, Darian, Addison (Madison), Michael (Daelynn), Damian (Ashley), and Juan (Megan); and his great-grandchildren, Hadley-Rose, Rylee, Hudson, Reia, Willow, Wrenley, and JJ.
He is also survived by his sisters, Gwen Matthew (Jeff), Karen Walthall, and Cathy Hensley.
Mac was preceded in death by his parents, James and Margaret Macdonald, and his brother, TJ.
Mac was one of a kind and could always make you laugh. He was tough, dependable, and loved his people fiercely. Whether you knew him as James, Mac, Jamie, Mac Badass, King Mac, Dad, or Pops, he will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory in Lynchburg.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home. Burial will follow at at Virginia Memorial Park.
In true Pops fashion, the family asks that everyone please dress comfortably and casually. Come as you are, just the way Pops would have wanted it.
