James Carroll "Jim" Harris, 88, of Goode, Virginia, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026. Born on September 12, 1937, in Front Royal, Virginia, Jim was the son of the late Frederick K. Harris and Caroline B. Harris.
Jim proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1957 to 1967 as a radioman. His decade of service included a significant moment in history when he and his brother were stationed in Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. This period of his life was one he held in high regard and spoke of with great pride.
Jim's last tour of duty was aboard the USS Holland-AS-32 stationed in Rota, Spain, where he and his wife, Judy lived for eighteen months. Their first child was born during this time.
Following his military service, Jim embarked on a long and dedicated career with the Social Security Administration. He worked as the assistant manager in both the Roanoke and Lynchburg offices until his retirement in 1996. His commitment to his work reflected his steadfast dedication to helping others.
A lifelong avid reader, Jim found joy and solace in books throughout his life. His love for reading was a constant source of enrichment and reflection. He was a frequent visitor of the Forest Public Library and enjoyed going to the Forest Farmers’ Market on Saturdays with his family.
Jim and Judy loved to travel and traveled many times to Australia, New Zealand, and several other countries and throughout the USA.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Judy L. Harris; daughters, Candace H. Harris and Emily F. Harrison; son, James F. Harris of Gold Coast, Australia; granddaughters, Katie A. Harrison, Anna X. Harrison, and Lily B. Harris; and grandson, James M. (Jack) Harris. He was predeceased by his father, Frederick K. Harris; mother, Caroline B. Harris; brother, Frederick K. Harris, Jr., and sisters Juanita LeBrun, and Nellie May Harris.
Jim's memory will live on through those who knew him and loved him dearly. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.
May his legacy of service, dedication, and love bring comfort to all who mourn his passing. A Funeral Service will be held on March 4, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Williams's Family Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Chester Gap, Virginia. A Memorial Service will be held on March 6, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Bedford Presbyterian Church 105 West Main Street, Bedford, Virginia. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall immediately preceding the Memorial Service.
