James Irvin Farlow, Sr., 77, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on Friday, January 16, 2026. He was the son of the late Irvin Grant Farlow and Eleanor Inez Hogan Farlow.

James was born on July 7, 1948, in Altavista, Virginia. He was a 1966 graduate of E.C. Glass High School. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and was a member of several veteran organizations, including the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Marine Corps League of Lynchburg, Vietnam Veterans of America, American Legion Post 16, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

James enjoyed a good cup of coffee and loved watching westerns. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and brother, and an all-around great guy. He loved the outdoors and worked with the Boy Scouts for many years.

James is survived by his children, Kimberly McFaden Lee and her husband, Alvin, and James Farlow, Jr.; grandchildren, Alysun Wade, Bethany McFaden, Jonathan Farlow, Amanda Farlow, and Haden Farlow; great-grandchildren, Gwen Wade, Hudson Wade, and Ahnova Williams; siblings, Patricia F. Largen, Michael F. Farlow, Sr. and his wife, Martha, and Peggy Brooks and her husband, Steve; his four-legged companion, Daisy May; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Guggenheimer Nursing Home for their care of James during his time there, and a special thank you to his aides Alesia Sharpe and Katia Robertson.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Lewis Noell, and father-in-law, Jesse Noell, Sr.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, with Pastor Mike Dodson officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. The family invites friends to return to the brother’s home following the service for light refreshments.
