James Donel Tharp was born on September 29, 1936, to the late Floyd James Tharp and Laurie Price Tharp in Pike County Indiana. He died on January 31, 2022, in Lynchburg, Virginia.
James was a United States Air Force Senior Master Sergeant for 23 Years (Retired). He worked at English’s Hardware in Altavista, Virginia (Retired).
James worked as a contractor and has helped build/repair numerous houses, cabinets, and furniture for friends & family in Altavista, Virginia and surrounding areas.
He was an active member for 50 years in the Masonic Fraternity (Lodge #316 Altavista, VA) and a member of the American Legion; additionally, James was a member of Lynchburg Moose Lodge #1416, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of Lynch Station Baptist Church, and a member of the Scottish Rite. James was always willing to lend a helping hand in any way that he could.
James loved flying planes locally whenever he had the opportunity.
James leaves to cherish his memory his wife Peggy Kegley Tharp. He was a loving, devoted husband for 51 years.
He is survived by children Tamra Jane Dalton, Jeffrey Leigh Dalton; Grandchildren Josh Donel Midkiff (Jennine), Marshall Dalton, Timothy Schulte (Lo), Megan Schulte; Great-Grandchildren Leo Dalton, Nichole Clarke (Adam), Joshua Geary, Logan Geary, Niko Schulte; Great-Great-Grandchild Sebastian Geary.
He was preceded in death by his siblings Joann Dunning (John), Mary Case (Raymond), Dean Tharp (Judy), Amelia Adams (Bob), Patty Craig (Ed), and Ruth Hall (Jessie).

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at Lynch Station Baptist Church.
