Isola Johnston, presently of The Summit Assisted Living Facility, formerly of Rustburg, known to friends as \"Shug\", passed away on September 25, 2012. She was born May 10, 1922, to Herbert and Jeanette Nelson in Frankfort, Indiana. She attended Western University for Women, now part of Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio, where she met and married Donald N. \"Buck\" Johnston, upon his graduation from Air Force Officer Candidate School. They spent the next two decades stationed at various military bases, while adding four children to their family.
After his retirement from the Air Force at the rank of Lt. Colonel, \"˜Buck\"™ went into Public Administration and eventually settled in Concord, and then Rustburg, Virginia, where he became the first County Administrator of Campbell County. In addition to working as a proofreader with Meredith- Burda Corporation, \"˜Shug\"™ became very involved in various community activities. She served as an Elder of Rustburg Presbyterian Church. She was an enthusiastic member of the Rustburg Methodist Church Handbell Choir. She taught adult literacy through the Literacy Project of the Campbell County Library, as well as being a volunteer with both the Campbell County Crisis Center and Hospice of the Hills. In her spare time, Shug could always be depended upon to make and decorate a cake for any occasion or birthday.
She is predeceased by her late husband and eldest daughter. She is survived by her three remaining children: Scott Johnston, of Oxford Ohio; Joel Johnston, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Erin Johnston Newton, of Carlsbad, California. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at the Rustburg Presbyterian Church. The Reverends Susan Balfour and Sherwood Smith will be conducting the service.
