Houston Maie Crowder, Jr.

Houston Maie Crowder, Jr., 84, of Lynchburg, Virginia, went to his heavenly home on July 29, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at Westminster Canterbury. He was born on October 3, 1941, in Lynchburg to the late Houston and Virginia Crowder. After graduating from E.C. Glass High School, Houston built a meaningful 36-year career as a financial advisor with Horner, Barksdale, & Company and later Scott & Stringfellow as a top producer. He was known by his clients and colleagues for his kindness, integrity, strong work ethic, and quiet grace.

Houston’s greatest joy in life was his family. He shared 63 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Linda, and treasured every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and extended family. Whether enjoying family vacations, gathering around the table, or simply being together, he found his greatest happiness in the people he loved most. He embraced life with enthusiasm and enjoyed sailing, hot rod cars, tennis, golf, and pickleball. He loved being in the kitchen and was known for his potato tarragon sourdough bread, parmesan breadsticks, and artisan loaves. He was a master at needlepoint and made beautiful works of art, including personalized Christmas stockings for his family, altar rail cushions, rugs, and pillows. He loved his church, Quaker Memorial Presbyterian, and was instrumental in positions chairing finance and stewardship committees. More than anything, he will be remembered for his quiet wisdom, generous spirit, and the steady love he shared with everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Houston is survived by his devoted wife, Linda McLennan Crowder; his son, Houston M. (Trey) Crowder, III and his wife Barbara R. Crowder; his daughter, Lara C. Green and her husband David E. Green; his grandchildren, Houston M. Crowder, IV and his girlfriend, Caiti S. Lieberman; Patrick W. Crowder and his fiancé, Kristen E. Phillips; D. Cooper Green; and Savannah F. Green; and his step-great-grandchildren, Skylar M. Glines, Brianna M. Glines, and Joshua J. Glines, Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister, Nancy V. Crowder.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Westminster Canterbury Healthcare and Gentle Shepherd Hospice for their exceptional care, kindness, and support. A Celebration of Houston’s life will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 2:00 at Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg, VA with a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, Houston requested that memorial contributions be made to Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund, 5810 Fort Avenue, Lynchburg VA 24502.
