Listen to Obituary

Hiawatha David Irving, 70, of Madison Heights, passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2026. He was the son of (Eugene Irving) and (Mary B. Goode).

(Hiawatha) was born on (July 21, 1955), in (Lynchburg, Virginia), to (Eugene Irving) and (Mary B. Goode).

Hiawatha was a hardworking, quiet, and deeply loving man whose strength was shown more in his actions than in words. Given the name Hiawatha by his doctor at birth, he was often called Byrd or David by others, but he preferred to be known as Hiawatha, a name that reflected his individuality and quiet resilience.

He had a love for basketball and painting, finding joy both in the energy of the game and the calm creativity of art. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, never seeking recognition, simply doing what needed to be done.

Hiawatha was not the loudest person in the room or the life of the party, yet his presence was unmistakable. When he was there, you felt it. He loved to dance, and he loved his family and friends with a steady, unconditional devotion.

To many, he was affectionately known as “Papa Byrd,” a name that perfectly reflected the guidance, care, and quiet strength he gave so freely. His legacy lives on in the love he shared and the lives he touched.

Hiawatha is survived by his children, David Pierce and Kimberly Epps; grandchildren, Bryana, Daja, James, and Joshua; great grandchild, Kai; his siblings, Rosa Housen and Otis Irving; and many loving friends in the community.

Hiawatha is preceded in death by his father, Eugene Irving; his mother, Mary B Goode; his two sisters, Peggy Jones and Delores Irving Powell; brother Eugene Irving.

He is also survived by his longtime friend, Shirley Speck, in whose home he lived; her son, Timothy Speck; and his devoted companion and best friend, Deborah Wilson.
