Helen Austin Dooley, 93, of Lynchburg, Virginia, peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. She was surrounded by family as she began her heavenly journey to reunite with her husband and children.
Born on September 9, 1932, in Virginia, Helen was the cherished daughter of the late Bryant William Sale and Nora Burch Sale. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Paul Felix Dooley; three brothers, Willie Boy Sale, Phillip Sale, and Charles Sale; three sisters, Frances Cunningham, Peggy Eagle, and Eleanor Hicks; and by her three beloved children: Sherry Ann Austin, Vickie Austin Willis, and William "Billy" Byrd Austin, Jr. whom she now holds close in the arms of her Savior.
Helen was a devoted member of Gospel Light Baptist Church, a place that brought her great joy and where her radiant smile was a constant blessing to all who knew her. Her loving spirit, kind heart, and gentle encouragement touched countless lives, leaving an enduring legacy of faith, grace, and unconditional love.
She is survived by her son-in-law Michael L. Willis, daughter-in-law Julie Austin; brother James Sale and sister, Betty S. Cofflin. Affectionately known to many as “Nanny,” she leaves behind her grandchildren: Michael “Todd” Willis, Steven “Wayne” Willis and his wife Beth, Jessica “Nikky” Smith and her husband Tanis, Adrian Scruggs and her husband Adam, and Noelle Ferguson and her husband Bryan. Her great-grandchildren, Bradley, Kaleigh, Austin, Parker, Aiden, Emerson, Karris, Dawson, Hudson, Austin, Layton, Taylor, Marleigh, and Jeffrey.
Family and friends are invited to gather at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, on Friday, April 24, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by a graveside service at 12:00 p.m. at Spring Hill Cemetery, with Rev. Brian Warren officiating.
In honor of Helen’s memory, contributions may be made to Gospel Light Baptist Church.
