Harry “Tom” Deaner, 69, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on January 16, 2026, at home after a long battle with cancer, with his children by his side.
Tom was born on August 19, 1956, in Lynchburg, Virginia. A devoted father, grandfather, and kind-hearted friend to everyone, he brought warmth and joy to all who knew him. He was a proud member of the Blue Ridge River Runners Club (BRRR) and an avid paddler, never happier than when his home was full of laughter and friends. His greatest passions in life included paddling rivers, camping, spending time with his newest grandson, music, cooking, and caring for his beloved Labrador dogs in years past.
He is survived by his son, Chris Deaner of Lynchburg; daughters Torii Deaner of Staunton and Dona Steppe of Evington; his former wife and caregiver, Helen Deaner of Lynchburg; his grandchildren, Cierra Nowlin, Caleb Nowlin, and Asher Helsel; and numerous friends, including his special longtime best friend, Junior.
Tom was preceded in death by his daughter, Melinda Deaner; his parents, Glenn and Ida Deaner; and his sisters, Ann Jennings and Carol Toombs.
A memorial service will be held at Living Word Baptist Church, 4130 Waterlick Rd, Forest, VA 24551, on January 24, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.
Following the service, friends and family are invited to a reception at Tom’s home, 101 Boonsboro Drive, Lynchburg, VA 24503.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Tom may be made to the Blue Ridge River Runners Club.
