Gwynn William Ramsey

Dr. Gwynn William Ramsey of Forest, VA peacefully completed his earthly journey on Tuesday, August 11, 2026. Gwynn was born November 13, 1931, in Drexel, NC to John C. Ramsey Jr. and Effie Mae Toney Ramsey. He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Amaryllis Ramsey Keaton; infant son, Kenan Dee Ramsey; and his beloved wife of 70 years, Betty June Queen Ramsey.

Left to cherish his memory are his children and grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Gwynn is survived by 3 children, Starla J. Shaeff (Clyne) of Amherst, Kevin G. Ramsey (Lisa) of Evington, Robyn D. Ramsey (Carolyn Wood) of Forest; 3 grandsons, Craig M. Shaeff of Amherst, Aaron C. Ramsey (Fran) of Potomac, MD and Brian A. Ramsey (Jessie) of Richmond, VA.

Dr. Ramsey was Professor of Biology Emeritus at University of Lynchburg in Lynchburg, VA after retiring from a 42 year teaching and research career. Gwynn was truly a Renaissance man. Not only was he a consummate field botanist and naturalist, but also had a passion for Appalachian storytelling, a cappella singing, and playing the harmonica. He was a church man all of his life, a follower of Christ, leader of youth and adults, and a long-time member of The Gideons International.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg.

The service will be private and at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Gideons International or a charity of your choice.

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff of Runk & Pratt Pearls of Life Memory Care and the staff of Gentle Shepherd Hospice.
