Garry Wayne McGrath, Jr.

Garry Wayne McGrath Jr., 66, of Moneta, Virginia, passed away on January 27, 2026. He died in the very place he was happiest: the home he built in 1999. 

A true craftsman, Garry left a lasting mark on the Smith Mountain Lake community through his work as a contractor and his time at Moneta Farm Supply. He was also highly knowledgeable in landscaping and vegetable gardening, bringing the same care and attention to the land that he brought to his work. One of Garry’s defining qualities was the pride he took in sharing his skills and knowledge, always willing to help and teach those around him. 

Above all else, Garry was a deeply devoted husband and a loving, steady father. He shared 42 years of marriage with his wife, Brenda McGrath, building a life rooted in hard work, loyalty, and care for family. He took great pride in his children and grandchildren, showing his love through presence, generosity, and quiet dedication. 

Garry is survived by his wife, Brenda McGrath, his three children, Jared McGrath and her husband Marcelo Salazar, Jessica McGrath Deets and her husband Ben Deets, and Michael McGrath and his wife Jessica Clarke McGrath, and six loving grandchildren; Luca, Rocco, John, Enzo, Charlie, and Annalise.

Garry held a deep, personal faith that shaped his values and guided the way he lived and cared for those around him. Please join us in remembering him. 

A funeral service to celebrate Garry’s life will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Tharp Funeral Chapel, Bedford. The family will receive friends for a visitation on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Tharp Funeral Home in Bedford, VA. Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford is assisting the family.
